VCU, coming off a 26-6 season and a trip to the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament, opens its 2024-25 season at home on Wednesday night when it welcomes Maryland Eastern Shore to the Siegel Center in Richmond, Virginia. The Eagles finished 15-15 last season, losing in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament. The Rams lost at Villanova in the first round of the WBIT. Coach Beth O’Boyle enters her 11th season at VCU and is 171-134 with a trip to the 2021 NCAA tournament. Malikah Willis was hired to lead Maryland Eastern Shore in April after a long career as an assistant dating back to 2001, most recently at Kennesaw State last season.

The Rams bring back 12 players from last season, but lost 2023-24 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Sarah Te-Biasu to Maryland in the transfer portal. VCU returns double-digit scorers in Timaya Lewis-Eutsey, who put up 12.9 points and 5.1 rebounds per game last season, and Mary-Anna Asare, who scored 10.4 points a night. Leading rebounder Mykel Parham (8.4 boards an outing) also returns.
Graduate student guards Zamara Haynes and Mahogany Lester were named preseason All-MEAC and are expected to lead the Hawks this season. Haynes, primarily a reserve, averaged 8.6 points per game last season while Lester put up 7.4 points a night as a starter for a Maryland Eastern Shore club that averaged just 62.2 points per game but allowed only 59.3 a night.
VCU is 3-0 all-time against the Hawks, including a 59-36 win at home on Dec. 20.
