Marquette will look for its first win on Sunday against Illinois on the road in women’s college basketball.
The 2024-2025 women’s college basketball season is underway and on Sunday night, Illinois will host Marquette at the State Farm Center in a non-conference matchup. The Golden Eagles opened the season on Thursday against the University of Central Florida on the road and ended up falling 57-50. Olivia Porter led her team in scoring with 14 points, while Skylar Forbes and Lee Volker were also in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Volker led on the boards with six rebounds, five of which were defensive. Overall, the team struggled offensively, only shooting 32.73 percent from the field and 16.67 percent from beyond the arc. At the line, the team did shoot 84 percent, but that won’t be good enough to win games unless the Golden Eagles can improve their shooting.

The Fighting Illini began the season with a big 80-53 exhibition win over Lewis, before beating No. 19 Florida State in an 83-74 win to move to 1-0 with the upset. The team never trailed in the game due in large part to 20-point performances from both Makire Cook and Adalia McKenzie. Kendall Bostic was right behind with 18 points on the night, while Gretchen Dolan finished the game with 11 points to round out the double-digit scorers.
On the boards, Brynn Shoup-Hill pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Fighting Illini and Bostic was just one rebound away from a double-double. Collectively, the team finished the game with three blocks and six steals to help maintain possession on the way to its big win.
While the Fighting Illini shot 46.8 percent from the field and 15.4 percent from the free throw line, there is certainly room for improvement, as the team continues with non-conference play in preparation for Big Ten competition, which begins in December.
Sunday’s game will be the seventh meeting between the two programs, but only one has been in the last decade. The Golden Eagles lead the series 5-1 with the most recent game being a close 71-67 victory last season.
