A pair of Top 25 rivals in the Big Ten square off on Sunday as unbeaten Michigan State hosts Iowa at the Breslin Center
No. 17 Michigan State (9-0) faces its stiffest test of the season so far on Sunday when they host No. 21 Iowa (9-1) at the Breslin Center in East Lansing in the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams. The Spartans haven’t faced a ranked opponent thus far while the Hawkeyes come in off a victory over a ranked foe on Wednesday. Iowa, the NCAA tournament runner-up each of the last two seasons, is in its first season after Caitlin Clark left the program and were 34-5 last season, extending their run of consecutive NCAA tourney appearances to six. Michigan State was also a tournament team a season ago, finishing 22-9.

A 9-0 fourth-quarter run spurred the Hawkeyes to a 75-69 win over No. 18 Iowa State on Wednesday. Lucy Olsen led the way with 25 points while Sydney Affolter added 16. Olsen averages 19.0 points and 5.3 assists, with Addison O’Grady scoring 13.9 points per game and Hannah Stuelke posting 13.5 points and 7.6 rebounds a night.
The Spartans last played on Dec. 8, routing visiting DePaul 89-61. Jaddan Simmons scored 18 points while Julia Ayrault finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Ayrault averages 16.4 points and 8.5 rebounds while Grace VanSlooten adds 15.5 points per game.
Iowa leads the all-time series 43-30 and has won the last four meetings, including a 76-73 win in Iowa City last season. Longtime assistant coach Jan Jensen took over the Hawkeyes program this season after Lisa Bluder retired. Robyn Fralick is in her second year leading Michigan State and is 31-9.
