Penn State (1-0) comes off a blowout win in its opener on Monday and now hosts UMBC (1-0) at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Friday night. The Nittany Lions finished 16-17 last season under former VCU coach Mike Rhoades, missing the postseason after reaching the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2023. The Retrievers haven’t played in the postseason since 2018, when they became the first No. 16 seed to beat a No. 1 seed in the first round of the NCAA tourney and were 11-21 last season. Jim Ferry is 48-49 in his fourth season coaching at UMBC.

Zach Hicks pumped in 22 points and had three steals in Penn State’s 108-66 trouncing of Binghamton at home on Monday night. Northern Illinois transfer Yanic Konan Niederhauser dropped 16 points in his Nittany Lions’ debut and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Ace Baldwin Jr. added 15.
The Retrievers also scored a blowout win at home on Monday, hammering U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association member Penn State York 95-66. Senior guard Marcus Banks Jr. scored 27 points in 23 minuytes while freshman Tim Eze came off the bench for 14 points in his collegiate debut.
Penn State also added transfers Freddie Dilione V (Tennessee), Kachi Nzeh (Xavier) and Eli Rice (Nebraska) along with freshmen Jahvin Carter, Miles Goodman, Joe Sedora, Dominick Stewart and Hudson Ward. UMBC’s list of newcomers includes transfers Josh Odunowo (Columbia), Chaydon Stone (JUCO), Daylon Dickerson (JUCO) and Louie Jordan (Weber State) as well as freshmen Eze, Jake Stout and Torin Bosch.
