More than six years on from their most recent encounter, Ukraine and Albania will reintroduce themselves as first-time foes in the UEFA Nations League, which begins anew this week. Both countries were in action at Euro 2024 over the summer but each bowed out as last-place finishers in their respective groups and will be hopeful of better fortune when the Nations League resumes. Saturday’s showdown will take place on neutral soil in Prague (Czech Republic), owing to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which promises to play in Albania’s favor if the Red and Blacks are to take every advantage they can.

Ukraine in particular was part of an incredibly tight assignment in Group E, where all four teams finished equal on four points apiece, but that didn’t prevent the eastern Europeans being sent home.

Albania, on the other hand, was unfortunate not to have done better in a ‘Pool of Death’ that included both Italy and Spain, each of whom they lost to by only one-goal margins.
Their other result at Euro 2024 ended in an impressive 2-2 draw against 2018 World Cup runner-up Croatia, but nonetheless left them off the pace compared to their peers.
The Nations League provides a chance for teams to get ahead in the continental pecking order as eyes now turn to qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
Albania in particular will be desperate to get ahead considering it’s yet to make its World Cup finals debut, though Sylvinho has his work cut out in a Nations League group that also includes Georgia and the Czech Republic.
