AZ Alkmaar is looking to become just the second team this season to notch a win over Galatasaray when the two teams scrum down in the Europa League on Thursday evening. Okan Buruk’s team have gone undefeated in all competitions since losing out to Swiss side Young Boys in the Champions League play-offs, piecing together a 15-game run without a loss and winning the last seven of those. The same really can’t be said for AZ after the Dutch outfit has lost seven of its last 10 outings in all competitions, though Maarten Martens’ men do have recent experience beating Turkish opposition.

And it was Gala’s bitter rival, Fenerbahce, who fell to defeat at the AFAS Stadium earlier in November, where two late goals clinched AZ’s second win of the Europa League calendar.
That result perhaps signalled a shift in the tide for Thursday’s host considering AZ has now won two of its last three after previously going seven games without a victory.
But that form can’t compare with the relentless run of Galatasaray, who sits just two points off Europa League leader Lazio with only a handful of matchdays remaining.
Buruk’s side made it seven wins on the bounce after Michy Batshuayi was in the right place at the right time to snatch a narrow win over Bodrum last weekend:
Gala now sits five points clear at the Super Lig summit and looks as though the title might be there for the taking, while AZ sits sixth in the Eredivisie and is far from silverware contention.
However, it’s worth noting Gala’s only stutter in the Europa League this term came on the road to Latvian side Rigas, giving AZ some hope that a result could be on the cards.
