    Matchday 2 of the first phase in the Champions League kicks-off on Wednesday as Real Madrid faces Lille for the first time.

    The defending La Liga and UEFA Champions League winners aim for its 12th consecutive victory Wednesday as Real Madrid heads to the north of France to face-off against Ligue 1 side Lille OSC. Real Madrid is unbeaten across all competitions this season, having dispatched of VfB Stuttgart in the first matchday of League play behind three second half goals by Kylian Mbappé, Antonio Rüdiger, and Endrick, earning the 3-1 home win in September. Lille is unbeaten in two consecutive matches after dropping its opening League play match 2-0 to Sporting CP as it positions itself for its first knockout appearance since 2022.

    Mbappé suffered a thigh injury in Madrid’s win over Alavés eight days ago and was expected to miss up to three weeks, but manager Carlo Ancelotti has stated the dynamic striker could be available for selection today. The French captain, who has scored seven goals for Madrid across all competitions, sat out Sunday’s draw against Atlético Madrid and comes into this match one goal away from tying countryman Thierry Henry for eighth all-time in Champions League scoring with 50 goals in this competition.

    The Mastiffs have lost two straight Champions League contests, dropping a second leg playoff round match to Slavia Prague in August after dispatching Fenerbahçe in the third qualifying round back in July.

    Lille is led by Canadian forward Jonathan David who has tallied five goals in his first six matches this season ,including a hat trick in Saturday’s 3-0 win at La Harve. David has 91 goals across all competitions for Lille since 2020-21, but has not scored a Champions League goal since netting three in his first appearance back in the 2021-22 campaign.

    This is the first Champions League meeting between the clubs.
