Heading into the first race in Sardinia in the FIM Motocross World Championship the points leader Kay de Wolf is in a position to expand his lead. He cruised through qualifying a little over three seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Thibault Benistant finished in second place and Rick Elzinga in third place during qualifying. Those two are fifth and 10th respectively in the season points standings. Another strong performance in the race today will give Benistant and Elzinga the opportunity to close the gap with de Wolf and the rest of the riders ahead of them. This season de Wolf is off to a great start with 113 total points, 12 ahead of the rest of the field in the FIM Motocross World Championships.

He has two wins this season and is building on a third place overall finish last season to being the best overall rider in the field to start this season.
Behind de Wolf in the standings to round out the top five are Simon Langenfelder (101 points), Andrea Adamo (82 points), Lucas Coenen (75 points) and Benistant (72 points) through the first two rounds of races. While de Wolf has won the first two races, the rest of the field is right behind him with the opportunity to close the gap.
In qualifying de Wolf got off to an elite start in the first lap, then Elzinga closed the gap and was in a position to earn the top speed. Ultimately de Wolf was able to ward off Elzinga and the rest of the field to put him in a position to start off the season with three straight races.
