The Akron Zips visit the Northern Illinois Huskies on Wednesday night in a MAC showdown in college football.

The Northern Illinois Huskies go for their second straight win on Wednesday night when they host the Akron Zips in college football. The Huskies snapped a two-game losing streak last week when they beat Western Michigan 42-28. The win got them back over .500 on the season at 5-4 overall, but they still sit at just 2-3 in the MAC. The Huskies have one of the biggest upsets of the year, as they beat Notre Dame in overtime, but they have gone just 3-4 since that win. Wednesday they will look to win a second in a row and get back to .500 in the conference standings.

The Huskies have leaned heavily on the run game with Antario Brown and Gavin Williams both over 500 yards on the ground on the season. Both players have over 110 carries and they have combined for 1,097 yards and six touchdowns. Ethan Hampton has led the passing attack, as he has thrown for 1,256 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Zips will have their hands full with the Huskies offense as they look to get a second win in their last three games.

They snapped a four-game winning streak two weeks ago when they knocked off Eastern Michigan, 25-21, but they couldn’t make it two in a row on Saturday when they fell to Buffalo 41-30.

The loss dropped them to 2-7 overall and just 1-4 in the MAC. It has not been a great season for the Zips, as they have struggled in conference play.

Three of their losses have come against Ohio State, Rutgers and South Carolina, but they have also had trouble keeping pace with the teams in the MAC.

Miami (OH) looks to keep its spot at the top of the MAC standings when it takes on Kent State on Wednesday night in college football.

The Miami (OH) Redhawks host the Kent State Golden Flashes on Wednesday night in a MAC showdown. The Redhawks came into the week tied with Ohio, Bowling Green and Western Michigan for first place in the MAC standings. They have risen to the top thanks to a four-game winning streak since losing their conference opener to Toledo back on Oct. 5. They lost by 10 to the Rockets, but have been perfect since and have won all but one of their games by double digits. Last week was the lone exception, as they needed to field goals in the fourth quarter to fend off a pesky Ball State team. They went into the fourth quarter tied with the Cardinals at 21, but the two field goals gave them a 27-21 victory. Quarterback Brett Gabbert played well as he threw for 219 yards and three touchdowns without turning the ball over. Reggie Virgil was his favorite target, as he got five passes for 101 yards and a touchdown.

The Golden Flashes will look to slow down the duo as they try and find a way to finally get their first win of the season.

It has not been a good season for the Golden Flashes, as they have yet to win a game and come into Wednesday 0-9 on the year. They have lost seven of their games by at least 19 points and have been shut out three times.

One of those shutouts came last week, as they fell to Ohio 41-0. It was another tough loss for a Golden Flashes team that hasn’t had a lot go right for them this season. They still have three more games this year in which they will try and find a win. Wednesday they hope that starts with a huge upset of the Redhawks.

The Eagles will have to slow down the Bobcats ground game if they want to have any shot at snapping a two-game losing streak and picking up the upset win.

The Eagles started the year 5-2, but have lost back-to-back close games to both Akron and Toledo.

They were close in both games, as they led in the fourth quarter against Akron before giving up a touchdown with four minutes left.

In their loss to the Rockets, they completed a Hail Mary pass as time expired, but missed the two point conversion and lost 29-28. It was a tough-luck loss for the Eagles and one they are hoping they can bounce back from on Wednesday night.

The Best Starts In NBA History, By Team Record

    0

The Cleveland Cavaliers have made history by starting the 2024-25 NBA season with a perfect 12-0 record, joining an elite group of teams that have achieved such impressive beginnings. This remarkable feat has sparked discussions about the best starts in NBA history. Let’s take a look at the top five undefeated starts to an NBA season, showcasing the dominance and excellence of these teams.

    1. Golden State Warriors (2015-16): 24-0

The 2015-16 Golden State Warriors set the gold standard for season starts, winning an incredible 24 consecutive games to open their campaign. Led by Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, this team eventually set an NBA record with 73 wins in the regular season. Their historic run came to an end with a loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on December 12, 2015.

    2. Houston Rockets (1993-94): 15-0

The Houston Rockets, featuring Hall of Famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler, began the 1993-94 season with 15 straight victories. This impressive start set the tone for a successful season that culminated in an NBA championship, with the Rockets defeating the New York Knicks in the Finals.

    3. Washington Capitols (1948-49): 15-0

Tying the Rockets’ mark, the Washington Capitols of the 1948-49 season also started 15-03. This often-overlooked team, coached by the legendary Red Auerbach, set the early standard for season starts in the nascent NBA. Their streak was finally broken by the Indianapolis Jets on December 7, 1948.

    4. Dallas Mavericks (2002-03): 14-0

The Dallas Mavericks, led by Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash, opened the 2002-03 season with 14 consecutive wins. This start highlighted the team’s offensive prowess and set the stage for a 60-win season. Their unbeaten run came to an end against the Indiana Pacers on November 28, 2002.

    5. Boston Celtics (1957-58): 14-0

The Boston Celtics of the 1957-58 season, featuring Bill Russell and Bob Cousy, matched the Mavericks’ 14-0 start. This Celtics team, under the guidance of Red Auerbach, showcased the dominance that would define the franchise for years to come. Their perfect start was halted by the New York Knicks on November 28, 1957.

These historic starts demonstrate the exceptional talent and teamwork required to achieve such prolonged perfection in the NBA. While the current Cleveland Cavaliers team has already etched its name in the record books, they still have a way to go to match the all-time best starts in league history.

Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs host Domantas Sabonis and the Sacramento Kings.

After losing their first two games of the season the Sacramento Kings (6-4) are playing great winning four of the last six. They are coming off a terrific win and look for another on the second night of a back-to-back. That will be a tall order against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs (4-6) who are finally getting to full strength. Devin Vassell played his first game of the season coming off the bench for 21 points in 22 minutes. With Vassell back in the fold San Antonio has one of the most exciting young rosters in the league led by Wembanyama along with Jeremy Sochan, Keldon Johnson and rookie Stephon Castle. That young core will try to slow down the veteran core of Domantas Sabonis, De’Aaron Fox and DeMar DeRozan of Sacramento.

He has had some big games and some more modest ones averaging 18.3 points, 10.2 rebounds, 4.0 blocks, 2.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game. The 2023-2024 Rookie of the Year has the opportunity for a big game against Sacramento who is playing the second night of a back-to-back.

The Cleveland Cavaliers go for an 11th straight win to start the season against the Chicago Bulls.

This season no team has gotten off to a better start than the Cleveland Cavaliers (11-0). They have joined a unique group of 15 teams to win at least 10 straight games. With another win against the Chicago Bulls (4-6) here today Cleveland will tie the sixth longest streak to start a season. In the history of the league five of the seven teams to open the season with 12 straight wins have made it all the way to the NBA Finals. The Cleveland offense has fueled this impressive start averaging a league-best 122.7 points per game. Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley Jr. and Jarrett Allen have found the chemistry and rhythm Cleveland has been trying to dial up for two seasons.

One of the biggest changes this season for Cleveland is the play of Mobley. This season he is averaging a career-high 18.4 points per game while stuffing the statsheet with 8.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.8 blocks and 1.1 steals per game. He has grown as a playmaker on the offensive end while dominating on the defensive end.

Mitchell is leading this Cleveland offense that has six players averaging double-figures with 22.5 points per game. He has found a groove with Garland who is averaging 20.5 points and 6.6 assists on career-best shooting splits 54-47-95 this season. Cleveland has two playmakers on the perimeter in Mitchell and Garland with two finishers in the paint in Mobley and Allen.

That quartet takes on a good, but inconsistent Chicago team for the first time this season. Zach LaVine leads the team in scoring at 22.0 points per game, but is listed as probable for this game with a thigh injury and an illness. With LaVine in the lineup Chicago is 4-3 this season alongside Coby White, Nikola Vucevic, Josh Giddey and a young, rebuilding roster.

Things started off great for Carolina, scoring the first two goals of the game from Jack Drury and Jordan Martinook. The Avalanche scored five goals in the second period to ruin that party. Carolina still went up 3-2 in the middle of the period with Martin Necas scoring on the power play. But the Avalanche kept coming, scoring three unanswered goals the rest of the period. Martinook scored again at the beginning of the period to bring Carolina within one, but the Hurricanes couldn’t muster any more scoring with the Avalanche capping off the game with an empty-net goal from Mikko Rantanen. Martinook finished the night as the third star though with two goals and he added an assist.

The Blue Demons are coming off a huge 92-59 win over Prairie View A&M on Thursday. DePaul cruised to victory by never trailing in the game against the Panthers. The Blue Demons won a game by 30 or more points for the first time since 2021 with the win. The offense was executing on every level with five DePaul players reaching double digits. No one scored more than Isaiah Rivera who finished the game with 17 points.

It was the second game in a row that Rivera led the Blue Demons in points but even more special is that Rivera eclipsed the 1,000-point mark in the game. NJ Benson was right behind him with 15 points and went 6-for-8 from the field with nine rebounds. DePaul dominated so much, its 25-point lead at half was the team’s biggest lead by the midway point since 2017. DePaul will be another big favorite here tonight against Mercer with the -7.5 line in the Blue Demons’ favor.

Mercer is also coming off a gigantic win and the Bears made an even bigger statement in their season opener beating Virginia University of Lynchburg on Thursday by a eye-watering 125-54 final. All 12 Mercer players scored at least two field goals in the game. The win came off nearly 60 percent shooting and the 125 points was a single-game program record. There were six bears scoring in double figures and Angel Montas Jr. led the squad with 18 points.

It was a great way to bring in head coach Ryan Ridder’s first win with the program. Let’s see if any of this momentum will travel with Mercer on the road.

In his 19th NHL season, Kopitar tallied his 800th career assist in a 6-3 home win over Vegas at the end of October. All three skaters are in their third seasons with the Flames with Coronato having posted a career high in goals after scoring just three goals in his first two seasons with the club.
