The Europa League gets underway on Wednesday as Portuguese giant Porto travels to Norway in search of a fast start against Bodo/Glimt.
Portuguese powerhouse Porto faces a difficult task when it opens its Europa League campaign on the road to Norwegian upstart Bodo/Glimt on Wednesday. The restructured second-tier continental competition will pit some of Europe’s elite against one another in a revamped format, which will see 36 teams compete to advance out of one giant league table, as opposed to the former make-up of numerous smaller groups. And Champions League regular Porto will be expected to be one of those in contention for an automatic qualifying spot, thought the looming threat of Bodo/Glimt could pose an early banana peel.

The current champion of Norway’s Eliteserien is sure to offer some stiff resistance among those middle-ranking teams hoping to make a mark in this season’s Europa League. And what better way to go about doing that then causing an early shock against one of the frontrunners having just failed to qualify for this term’s Champions League themselves?
After beating Sporting CP to lift the Portuguese Super Cup in August, Porto has embarked on a run of five wins from six and currently sits second in the Primeira Liga.
Summer signing Samu Omorodion in particular has fit in with ease and scored three goals in his last two appearances for the Dragons, including a brace in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Vitoria Guimaraes.
The 20-year-old will be expected to play a big role in threatening the defensive ranks of Bodo/Glimt, who sits seven points clear at the top of the Eliteserien and is en route to defend its crown.
That being said, one can only imagine Porto will find a way to penetrate Bodo’s lines after the Norwegians failed to keep a clean sheet in either of its last two European outings against Red Star Belgrade.
