Defending champion Erik van Rooyan returns to Los Cabos’ El Cardonal to defend his WorldWide Technology Championship title.
The sixth of eight events on the PGA Tour’s FedExCup Fall schedule opens on Thursday with the WorldWide Technology Championship at El Cardonal at Diamante in Los Cabos, Mexico, in Baja California. Defending champion Erik van Rooyen, who set a tournament record to par at 27-under last year, returns looking to move into the top 60 on the FedExCup standings. van Rooyen comes in in 67th place, outside the group between 51-60 that will earn exemptions to the first two Signature Events of 2025, the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Championship.

The winner will claim $1,296,000 from the tournament’s $7.2 million purse as well as a full two-year exemption on the Tour. van Rooyen’s victory last year came by two strokes over Matt Kuchar and Camilo Villegas. El Cardonal is a Tiger Woods-designed course and began hosting the tournament last year after LIV Golf scheduled an event at El Camaleón Golf Course in Mayakoba, the previous host course for the event.
Five different players have won the first five FedExCup Fall events, including Patton Kizzire, Kevin Yu, Matt McCarty, J.T. Poston and Nico Echavarria, who won last month’s Zozo Championship in Japan.
Viktor Hovland, the lone two-time winner in the event’s history, went back-to-back in 2020 and 2021 but is not playing this year. Other former champions in the field include Kuchar (2018), Kizzire (2017), Charley Hoffman (2014) and Harris English (2013). Lucas Glover, at No. 63, is the highest-ranked player outside the top 60 in the field for the tournament.
