While three players will come back on Friday to finish their final hole of the first round, three others completed their rounds at five-under-par 67 and share the lead entering Friday’s second round of the World Wide Technology Championship at El Cardonal in Los Cabos, Mexico, on the Baja California peninsula. Tom Whitney, Rico Hoey and Kevin Streelman claimed a share of the first-round lead with seven other players, including defending champion Erik van Rooyen, standing one shot back. The tournament is the sixth of eight events on the PGA Tour’s FedExCup Fall schedule, with players outside of the top 50 on the FedExCup points list playing for entry into two of next year’s Signature Events and for full tour status in 2025.

Whitney and Streelman put themselves in position to move from outside the top 125 players who earn PGA Tour cards for next season to well within that group. Streelman arrived in Mexico in 139th place and Whitney was in 171st. As for Hoey, he projects to move from 85th place to 54th, putting him potentially in line to earn exemptions to the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Genesis Invitational Signature events next year.
The winner of the tournament earns $1.296 million from the event’s $7.2 million purse as well as full two-year PGA Tour exemptions. van Rooyen still has a year remaining on his exemption after setting a tournament record with his 27-under-par score in 2023.
He is trying to join Viktor Hovland as the only two-time champions of the event, which began in 2007. Besides van Rooyen, Taylor Montgomery, Max Greyserman, Nate Lashley, Austin Eckroat, Kelly Kraft and Ryan McCormick hold a share of fourth place at four-under after opening-round 68s. Joe Highsmith was three-under through 17 holes when play was suspended while playing partners Austin Smotherman and Neal Shipley were at one-under and four-over, respectively.
