Maverick McNealy and Michael Thorbjornsen share the lead entering Friday’s second round on Saint Simons Island.
While Maverick McNealy scored the Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course for an 8-under-par 62 on Thursday, Michael Thorbjornsen put himself in position to make a move for a full PGA Tour card for next season after an eight-under-par 64 on the Plantation Course. The two top the leaderboard entering Friday’s second round at The RSM Classic, where the players will switch courses before the cut Friday afternoon. Thorbjornsen came into the tournament in 138th place in the FedExCup Fall standings and projects to move up to 77th and full Tour status should he hold his position. The event is the last of eight on the FedExCup Fall schedule.

McNealy’s round was highlighted by an eagle at the par-five 15th hole after starting on the back side at Seaside. Thorbjornsen was steady, carding four birdies on each side at Plantation. Andrew Novak is one shot off the lead after a 65 at Plantation, while Adrien Dumont de Chassart and Chandler Phillips are two shots back at six-under.
Seven players are tied for sixth at five under after one round, including Kevin Yu, who looks to move into the AON Next 10 group, the 51st through 60th finishers on the points list who earn entry into next season’s first two Signature events, the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Genesis Invitational.
Defending champion Ludvig Åberg, returning to competition after knee surgery in September, posted a three-over-par 75 and is in a group tied for 135th place that has work to do on Friday to avoid missing the cut. The winner claims $1.44 million from the tournament’s $8 million purse.
