Retief Goosen drops a birdie at the 18th on Friday to take a 1-shot lead at The Country Club of Virginia in Richmond
The opening round of the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs teed off Friday at The Country Club of Virginia in Richmond, with the top 72 players on the points list in the field. Retief Goosen opened with a first-round 66, making a birdie on the 18th hole to take a one-shot lead heading into Round 2 on Saturday. The 54-hole, no-cut event features a $2.3 million purse, with $350,000 to the winner. As a playoff bonus, that will amount to 700,000 points in the race to win the Charles Schwab Cup.

Ernie Els and Steven Alker, who entered the playoffs first and second, respectively, on the Charles Schwab Cup Points list, each shot one-under-par 71s and are in a tie for 18th with several other players. Five players are a shot behind Goosen, including Steve Flesch, Greg Chalmers, Paul Goydos, Heath Slocum and Stewart Cink.
Tim Petrovic enters Saturday in solo seventh at four-under, followed by Ken Duke, Shane Bertsch, Bob Estes, Ken Tanigawa and Ricardo Gonzalez at three-under-par. The top 54 players on the points list after the tournament continue on to play in the Simmons Bank Championship next weekend.
Defending champion Harrison Frazar qualified for the playoffs but opted not to play in Richmond this week. Bernhard Langer, the only two-time winner of the event, is in the tie for 18th at one-under-par after the first round.
