The Islanders return three skaters who tallied over 30 goals a year ago as centers Brock Nelson, Bo Horvat and Kyle Palmieri combined for 97 goals last season. Horvat has tallied three consecutive 30-goal seasons including a career-high 38 in 2022-23 when he was acquired at the trade deadline from Vancouver. The 29-year old was a first round selection by the Canucks in the 2013 NHL Draft and tallied his 500th career point late last year.
Though not technically an expansion franchise, Utah has 14 players on tonight’s roster who played for Arizona last season alongside coach Andre Tourigny who saw a 13-point improvement between his first and second years at the helm of the Coyotes franchise. Given the successes of other recent expansion clubs in Vegas and Seattle, it is not out of the realm of possibility Utah makes the postseason this year.
The Islanders finished the regular season on an 8-1-1 streak and finished the campaign with a 21-10-10 home record.
