Crosby and the Penguins open five-game homestand looking to snap losing streak as the Sharks skate into Pittsburgh
Amid a 3-13 slump, the Pittsburgh Penguins return to home ice on Saturday night as they welcome the San Jose Sharks into PPG Paints Arena looking to continue their dominance over their visitors by winning a fourth straight meeting. The Sharks lost nine straight games to open the 2024-25 National Hockey League season but have rebounded to win five of their last nine games as they wrap up a four-game eastern roadtrip in the first of two meetings with the Penguins this season. Crosby, in his 20th season after the Penguins selected him first overall in the 2005 NHL Draft, would join fellow Pittsburgh greats Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr in a group of nine players to ever score 600 goals and have over 1,000 assists should he score two goals on Saturday. Avalanche center Joe Sakic was the last player to join the 600/1,000 club achieving the feat in 2008.
Sharks second line tandem of winger William Eklund and center Mikael Granlund have combined for 30 points this season with both skaters tallying double-digit assists. In his 13th season in the NHL, Granlund is two assists away from 400 for his career and returns to Pittsburgh where he played 21 games for the Penguins in 2023.
The Penguins have won five of the last six meetings in this series but San Jose has won three of the last five played in Pittsburgh.
