The Capitals, who lead the National Hockey League in scoring this season, will hit the ice for the first time without center Alexander Ovechkin whose goal-scoring record chase has been sidelined with a lower leg injury. Colorado has overcome separate three and four-game losing streaks this season and have won five of their last seven games including the opener of their current four-game road trip at Philadelphia on Monday night.

Reigning league MVP Nathan MacKinnon leads the league in points and assists this season but was held without a point in Friday’s loss to Washington marking just the second game the former No. 1 overall pick has been shut out this season. After consecutive 110-plus point seasons, MacKinnon is on pace to eclipse his career-high of 140 set last season.

With Ovechkin out of the lineup Washington’s scoring responsibilities fall to 23-year-old center Connor McMichael who has 12 goals on the year with two multi-goal performances in his last five games. A first-round selection by Washington in the 2019 NHL Draft, McMichael played just 74 games in his first three years before scoring 18 goals for the Capitals last season.

Colorado ranks fourth in the league on the power play converting on 30.6% of chances with the man advantage despite scoring just two power play goals in the last six games.
