The Washington Capitals return from the NHL’s holiday break on Saturday, visiting a Toronto Maples Leafs team that will be playing the second half of a road-home back to back.
It’s been a long layoff for the Washington Capitals (23-9-2), who haven’t played since before the NHL’s holiday break on Monday. They’ll return to the ice on Saturday, and while they’ll be on the road they’ll have the advantage of rest. After having lost two games in a row before the break, Toronto returned playing at a higher level. The Maple Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings to pick up a 5-2 road win of Friday. That game featured a hat trick from right winger Mitch Marner, and two assists for center John Tavarez.
Washington’s last game was in Boston on Monday, when the Capitals lost 4-1 to the Bruins. Prior to that, the Caps had won two games in a row and six of their last eight contests.
Saturday’s game will be the third and final regular season meeting of the year between the Capitals and Maple Leafs. The road team has won each of the first two – Toronto went into Washington and picked up a 4-3 overtime win back in mid-December, and then in early January the series shifted to Scotiabank Arena where the Capitals picked up a 3-1 win.
