The Buffalo Sabres take a three-game winning streak into Monday’s home game against the sliding Montreal Canadiens.
The Buffalo Sabres (7-7-1, 15 points) have won three straight games to get back to the .500 mark and on Monday afternoon welcome their Atlantic Division rivals, the Montreal Canadiens (4-9-2, 10 points), to KeyBank Center. The Canadiens have lost six in a row and are 0-5-1 in that span. Montreal is 0-2-0 on its current four-game road trip, while the Sabres opened a three-game home stretch with a shootout win on Saturday. The Canadiens haven’t made the playoffs since reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2021, while Buffalo’s 13-year playoff drought is the longest in NHL history.

JJ Peterka scored the only goal in Saturday night’s shootout, lifting the Sabres to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames. Buffalo led 2-0 after one period before Calgary came back to tie the game with 4:18 remaining in regulation. Zach Benson opened the scoring 1:11 into the game and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 24 saves.
Montreal fell into a 3-0 hole and never climbed out in a 4-1 loss on the road to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. Brendan Gallagher had the lone tally for the Habs midway through the second period.
Winger Patrik Laine, acquired by Montreal from the Columbus Blue Jackets in August, has yet to play because of a sprained knee, while winger Rafaël Harvey-Pinard remains on injured reserve with a leg injury. Cole Caufield leads the Canadiens with 10 goals and Nick Suzuki has four goals and 13 points. Sam Montembeault is 3-7-1 in 11 starts with an .888 save percentage and 3.51 goals against average.
Tage Thompson scored his team-high 10th goal on Saturday and also leads the Sabres with 17 points. Luukkonen is 6-4-1 in 11 starts and owns a .910 save percentage and 2.64 GAA.
