We are a quarter of the way through the NFL season and some coaches are already starting to wonder if they will make it to the end of the season. The top teams have been really good, but there are a handful of teams that have been a huge disappointment.
There is still a lot of time to turn things around and for these five coaches, they need to do a lot to avoid getting fired. One of them may surprise you.

Matt Eberflus – Chicago Bears
The first four weeks of the NFL season couldn’t have gone any worse for Eberflus and the Bears. Quarterback Justin Fields looked lost, the defense couldn’t get off the field and they blew a 21-point lead to a Broncos team that gave up 70 points the week before. The Bears were winless and Eberflus’ seat was scorching hot. The Bears, though, went out on Thursday night and looked great in a 40-20 win over the Commanders. Eberflus might not have made it back to Chicago if they lost that game but now, they have shown some life. They need to continue to do this the rest of the season, though, or Eberflus could be out of a job.
Brandon Staley – Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers have a ton of talent and a great quarterback in Justin Herbert but they continue to underachieve. Staley seems to outsmart himself too often and it has cost the Chargers. Last year, they blew a 27-point lead to the Jaguars in the playoffs last year and have started off just 2-2 this year. If the Chargers miss the playoffs he will be gone and he could be gone if they flame out early again.

Josh McDaniels – Las Vegas Raiders
There were some thoughts he might not make it to this year but he did and it hasn’t gotten a lot better. Yes, they did get a win on Monday night, but at 2-3, they aren’t exactly lighting the world on fire. This is his second time being a head coach and he might just be proving that he is a great coordinator but not a head coach.
Arthur Smith – Atlanta Falcons
Smith has the Falcons at 3-2 on the season but it looks more like a mirage at times. Their quarterback situation is a mess, they are wasting Kyle Pitts and haven’t shown they can beat anybody good. Smith hasn’t been horrible, but there is not a lot of excitement coming out of Atlanta with him in charge.

Bill Belichick – New England Patriots
Belichick probably won’t get fired, but if he had a different name he definitely would. He has built up enough good-will with his Super Bowl wins, but Tom Brady is gone and he has looked very average. He has missed the playoffs in two of the three seasons without Brady and looks well on his way to making it three in four this season. The Patriots are not getting better and his “genius” draft picks are not working out. He has a right to call it quits when he wants but the Patriots have to ask if it is time to move on.
