It’s a common NFL coaching cliché this time of year that the season doesn’t really start until November. Week 9 includes the first week of November, so here we are.
If this is where the NFL season really starts then what a start the league has in store! The Week 9 slate is one of the best, if not the best, of the season so far. It includes multiple potential conference championship previews and some other fun matchups as well. Let’s take a look at the top five games of Week 9.

5. Minnesota Vikings (4-4) at Atlanta Falcons (4-4)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET on FOX
Two teams in very interesting spots battle it out in Atlanta in the early window on Sunday. After starting the season 0-3, the Minnesota Vikings are 3-1 in their last four games. However, their most recent win last week saw starting quarterback Kirk Cousins tear his Achilles, ending his season.
This will be the first chance to see how the Vikings move forward offensively as they try to stay in the playoff hunt. Rookie Jaren Hall is expected to start at quarterback but the team also acquired Josh Dobbs from the Arizona Cardinals at the trade deadline on Tuesday.
As for the Atlanta Falcons, they’re sitting tied atop the NFC South at 4-4 but just allowed a season-high 28 points to the Tennessee Titans in a 28-23 loss. The team is also on the verge of making a change at quarterback with Taylor Heinicke replacing Desmond Ridder.
This week would be a good chance for the Falcons to experiment against a Vikings offense that will be in a state of transition. Look for the Dirty Birds to bounce back after last week’s loss.
4. Seattle Seahawks (5-2) at Baltimore Ravens (6-2)
Sunday, 1 p.m. ET on CBS
This should be a good all-around football game. The Seattle Seahawks rank 11th offensively and 11th defensively in the NFL while the Baltimore Ravens have the seventh-best offense and best defense.
On paper, the Ravens have a slight edge but the Seahawks have been able to punch above their weight class regularly this year, with wins over the Detroit Lions and then last week the Cleveland Browns. Can they go on the road and pick up another win against an over .500 opponent?
To do so, they’d need to slow down the Lamar Jackson-led Ravens offense that hung 38 points and over 500 yards on the Lions just two weeks ago. This game should be close, but it wouldn’t be surprising if a big play or two from Jackson ends up being the difference in this one.

3. Buffalo Bills (5-3) at Cincinnati Bengals (4-3)
Sunday, 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC
This is a game that will certainly carry a lot of emotions. When these two teams met last year, the game was cut short and ultimately canceled when Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest on the field.
As the two teams meet again the stakes aren’t quite as high as they were last year, but it’s still a very significant matchup. Both the Bills and Cincinnati Bengals were considered AFC contenders to start the season but stumbled out of the gate.
The Bills still have some questions to answer. They’re 2-2 in the last month including a narrow win over the New York Giants and a loss to the New England Patriots. However, they seemed to get back on track somewhat with a 24-18 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week.
On the other side, the Bengals are rolling. Joe Burrow finally looks healthy and has led the team to three wins in a row. Playing at home, it wouldn’t be surprising if he and Cincinnati added to that streak this Sunday night.
2. Miami Dolphins (6-2) vs. Kansas City Chiefs (6-2)
Sunday, 9:30 a.m. ET on NFL Network
In what may be the most consequential game ever playing in the NFL’s International Series, the top two teams in the AFC meet with the Miami Dolphins taking on the Kansas City Chiefs in Germany. Halfway through the season, many are predicting this game could be an AFC championship preview.
Miami’s high-powered offense is the best in the league. Featuring the wide receiver duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, Mike McDaniel’s team is averaging 33.9 points per game.
While there’s always a chance the game turns into a shootout with Patrick Mahomes on the other side, this is actually more about the Miami offense versus the Kansas City defense. The Chiefs are allowing just 16.1 points per game this season, which ranks second in the NFL. Their offense ranks surprisingly just 12th, averaging 23.4 points per game.
There’s an old football saying that defense travels and this game across the pond is the longest trip for either team. If the Chiefs’ defense can relatively slow down the Miami offense, Mahomes certainly has the ability to make plays late and win the game.

1. Dallas Cowboys (5-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (7-1)
Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET on FOX
It’s a divisional game. It’s a rivalry. And it’s between two of the best teams in the NFC, including the team with the best record in the NFL. How could this not be our game of the week?
The Philadelphia Eagles are the only one-loss team left in football, with just three other two-loss teams joining them in the NFC. One of those is the Dallas Cowboys, who are just a game and a half behind Philly in the division heading into the first of two head-to-head matchups.
Will the Eagles pick up another win against a contending team? Or will the Cowboys make things very interesting in the NFC East? We saw two weeks ago against the Dolphins what Philadelphia’s home-field advantage can do – it wouldn’t be surprising if it plays another big role this week.
