Northwestern returns home from a loss to host unbeaten UIC on Tuesday in college basketball.
Northwestern (1-1) took its first loss of the season on Saturday night and returns home on Tuesday night to host Chicago-area rival UIC (2-0) at Welsh-Ryan Arena in college basketball. The Wildcats have played in the last two NCAA tournaments, reaching the second round each year, and coach Chris Collins is 179-175 in his 12th season at the school, with all three of the program’s NCAA bids coming during his tenure. The Flames brought in coach Rob Ehsan, a former Stanford assistant and UAB head coach, on April 1 after firing Luke Yaklich after four seasons and a 47-70 record, including 12-21 last season. UIC hasn’t gone to March Madness since 2004 and its last postseason appearance was in the 2018 CIT.

Northwestern led by as much as 13 in the first half and had a 10-point edge with 10 minutes remaining before host Dayton took over for a 71-66 win on Saturday night. Nick Martinelli scored a career-high 32 points and added 14 rebounds and reserve Angelo Ciaravino added 12 points in the loss.
The Flames got hot in the second half to pull away from visiting Yale for a 91-79 win on Friday night. The bench carried the offensive load, with Tyem Freeman dropping 19 points and Jordan Mason knocking in 16, while Xavier transfer Saša Ciani finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Ahmad Henderson II contributed 11 points and seven assists.
The Wildcats lead the all-time series 6-4 and have won the last three matchups, most recently a 92-54 win at home on Dec. 20, 2022. Martinelli has 58 points and 24 rebounds in the Wildcats’ first two games and is their lone double-digit scorer. Javon Jackson leads UIC with 34 points, Ciani has 24 points and 18 boards, and Henderson has booked 25 points and 12 assists.
