Texas and Saint Joseph’s will face off at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York, on Friday night for the championship of the UGK Legend’s Classic. The men’s college basketball tournament also featured Syracuse and TBD. The Longhorns came into this tournament with a 3-1 record through their first two and a half weeks of the regular season. They started the season as the No. 19 ranked team in the country and lost their first game to Ohio State. They beat Houston Christian, Chicago State, and Mississippi Valley State before this tournament.
They matched up against Syracuse in the first round and jumped out to a commanding lead going into the halftime break with a double-digit lead. They allowed Syracuse to edge back in the second half, but they kept their chins up and finished with a four-point win. Arthur Kaluma led the team in scoring with 16 points and 10 rebounds with four assists. Tre Johnson, the stellar freshman, also had 16 points in the win.
The Hawks also had a 3-1 record coming into the tournament yesterday. They took down Navy, Villanova, and Penn to start the season with a rough loss to Central Connecticut by six points. They took on Texas Tech in the first round of the tournament and came out firing. Saint Joseph’s broke the lead out to 10 points at the halftime break and were rolling. They allowed Texas Tech to climb back in the second, though.
With the game tied 77-77 with 13 seconds left, Saint Joseph’s Justice Ajogbor was fouled and went to the line with a chance to break the tie. He made one of two, and Texas Tech missed the game-winner. Erik Reynolds led the team with 26 points on 6-of-11 from downtown. Xzayvier Brown also had 20 points in the win.
