Baylor Scheierman and No. 15 Creighton will take the court against Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Wednesday night.
Texas-Rio Grande Valley will head on the road on Wednesday night for their season-opening game against the No. 15 ranked team in the country, Creighton, at CHI Health Center. The Jayhawks are bringing back several starters from last year, as well as several transfers that will boost this team. The big three are back, including Trey Alexander, Baylor Scheierman, and Ryan Kalkbrenner. Together, the three of them averaged 52 points per game, led by Scheierman, who had 18.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Alexander led the team in assists with 4.7 per game, while averaging 17.6 points per game. From the bench, Isaac Traudt is expected to play a starting role as well. He averaged just 2.9 points in 8.9 minutes per game for Creighton in his freshman season. Utah State Transfer Stephen Ashworth will boost the front court.
Ashworth averaged 11.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game last season in his junior season with the Aggies. The Vaqueros are bringing back two of the team’s five players who averaged over 10 points per game last season.
Hasan Abdul-Hakim was the No. 2 player on the team last season averaging 13.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game, while shooting 49.4 percent from the floor. The team’s leading scorer last season Elijah Elliot moved on to Southern Illinois. J.J. Howard is also still with UT-Rio Grande after averaging 10.0 points per game last season.
