It’s the dawn of a new age in Chapel Hill, as for the first time since 2018, North Carolina opens a season without Armando Bacot starting at center. The Tar Heels respond with a push to the perimeter, led by All-American RJ Davis, with sophomore Elliot Cadeau back after starting 31 games last seasn. Transfer Ven-Allen Lubin comes for frontcourt support from Notre Dame, with freshman Ian Jackson likely to start at the 3.

Memphis, meanwhile, lost David Jones, Jahvon Quinerly and Nae’Qwan Tomlin from last year’s team that cratered after a 15-2 start. But a talented array of transfers arrived in PJ Haggerty (Tulsa), Tyrese Hunter (Texas) and Dain Dainja (Illinois). But the coaching staff underwent a purge in early September when Hardaway dismissed assistants Faragi Phillips, Jamie Rosser and Rick Stansbury along with special adviser Demetrius Dyson.

Historically, North Carolina’s 53 NCAA tournament appearances are second-most all-time and it has six national championships to go with 21 Final Four appearances. The Tigers have twice played in the NCAA championship game, though their 2008 appearance was later vacated. Of their 28 tournament bids, six were later vacated, including the program’s other Final Four appearance in 1985.

    Regional restrictions may apply.
