Michigan State looks to win its second straight game to open the season when it hosts Niagara on Thursday night in college basketball.
The Michigan State Spartans take on the Niagara Purple Eagles on Thursday night in a non-conference basketball battle. The Spartans opened their season on Monday with an easy 81-57 win over Monmouth. The Spartans jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead and then cruised in the second half to get the season-opening win. Jaden Akins led the way as he scored a game-high 23 points. They Spartans had 10 guys score, but only two scored in double figures. Despite the easy win they struggled from deep, as they shot just 3-of-18 from three-point range. They dominated in the paint, though, as they outscored Monmouth 48-8. It was a dominating performance down low for the Spartans, but they will look to be better from the outside against the Purple Eagles on Thursday.

The Purple Eagles also got a win in their first game of the year, as they beat Houghton 100-65. It was an easy first win for them, but the competition ramps up in a big way on Thursday.
Jahari Williamson was the team’s top scorer, as he scored 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 4-7 from deep.
All five starters scored in double figures for the Purple Eagles in the win and two guys off the bench did as well. It was a balanced attack in the victory and they will need much of the same on Thursday if they want to have any shot at pulling off the huge upset.
