Mount St. Mary’s will head on the road at the end of the first week of men’s college basketball to take on the Big Ten side Maryland at the XFINITY Center in College Park, Maryland, on Friday night. The Terrapins are 1-0 after taking down Manhattan in the first game of the season on Monday night, opening night. They waltzed their way to a 30-point lead despite having just a three-point lead at the halftime break. They put on a clinic in the second half, taking a 27-point lead in that half. Two starters stood out specifically in that win: freshman Derik Queen and junior Ja’Kobi Gillespie. Queen had 22 points and 20 rebounds in one of the most dominant performances of a single person on opening night. He shot 9-for-16 from the floor as well. Gillespie had 16 points, three rebounds, and five assists. Rodney Rice came off the bench and had 12 points on 44.4% shooting.
The Mountaineers picked up a win on opening night as well as Maryland after beating Notre Dame (MD) by 36 points, 98-62. They were up 14 at the halftime break and won by 22 points in the second half. Five players finished in double figures led by Dallas Hobbs, who had 17 points and five rebounds.
Jedy Cordilla had the only double-double of a starter for the team with 14 points and 11 rebounds to start off his senior year at Mount St. Mary’s. Terrell Ard Jr. also had a double-double, but he came off the bench with 12 points and 14 rebounds for the fifth-year senior in his second season with the team after coming over from Presbyterian.
