The winner of the meeting will take third place at the 2024 Maui Invitational. The Trojans faced Colorado in the first round of the tournament, where the team was able to take a 72-56 victory. Jase Richardson led Michigan State with 13 points in 23 minutes of action at the Lahaina Civic Center. No other player reached 10 points in the win, with Frankie Fidler being the closest on the team with his nine points in 20 minutes.

The Trojans then lost in the second round on Tuesday, a 71-63 defeat against Memphis in Lahaina, Hawaii. Richardson once again led the team, this time putting up 18 points in 25 minutes. Meanwhile, Jaden Adkins had 12 points and five rebounds in the loss, while Fidler added 10 points to go along with five boards of his own.
Meanwhile, North Carolina opened the tournament with a narrow 2-point victory over Dayton on Monday night. R.J. Davis put up a game-high 30 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists, while Seth Trimble added 27 and 10 in the win at the Lahaina Civic Center.
Then, the Tar Heels lost by 13 points to Auburn on Tuesday. Trimble led the team with 17 points in this one, while Davis had 12 in the second-round defeat.
