Big Ten college basketball play begins Wednesday night for Michigan State and Minnesota, as the teams meet in Minneapolis.
On Wednesday night the Michigan State Spartans will travel to Minneapolis to take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Williams Arena as the teams kick off Big Ten play. Minnesota comes into conference competition with a record of 6-3 so far and will look to use momentum from its last win, a 79-62 victory against Bethune-Cookman, to make it past a strong Michigan State squad.
Against the Wildcats, Dawson Garcia led all scorers with a 23-point performance while Brenna Rigsby joined him in double figures with 14 points. Femi Odukale led the team on the boards with seven rebounds to go along with his seven points on the night. The Spartans are right on the cusp of breaking into the top 25 with a record of 6-2 so far and a big win over No. 20 UNC their last time out. Michigan State traveled to Hawaii to play in the Maui Invitational last week and suffered its second loss of the season to No. 16 Memphis in a 71-63 defeat, before bouncing back to beat the Tar Heels 94-91 in overtime.
Tre Holloman led all scorers with 19 points, while five other Spartans joined him in double figures. Coen Carr and Xavier Booker each pulled down seven rebounds to lead on the boards and scored 14 and 12 points, respectively. While the team shot an impressive 54 percent from the field, the Spartans only went 4-for-16 from three-point range, an area that will need some big improvement now that conference play is upon them.
Michigan State and Minnesota last met during the first round of the Big Ten Tournament last season. The Spartans earned a 77-67 victory before losing to Purdue in the second round.
