VCU hopes to maintain its dominant run to open the season when it hosts Merrimack on Wednesday in college basketball.
VCU tries to remain undefeated to open the season after winning its first two games when it hosts Merrimack on Wednesday night. Everything has been going right so far for the Rams after a blowout exhibition game against St. Mary’s (Md.) where VCU won 102-44. It didn’t count in the record book, but it set the precedent for VCU these last couple of games where the Rams have cruised to victory. VCU is coming off a big win against Boston College on Friday, with the Rams winning 80-55. It was the dynamic duo of Phillip Russell and Joe Bamisile that helped lead VCU to the large victory. They both combined for 38 points with Russell scoring a game-high 20 points.
But it was the defense that was even more smothering, holding the Eagles to just 29 percent shooting from the field. It got even worse for Boston College from three where the team was just 2-for-11. VCU has not trailed in either of its games to open the season. The Rams are going to be a very tough opponent to stop at home.

Merrimack has only played one game so far this season, but it was also an easy one, beating Vermont 65-51. It was Adam “Budd” Clark who led the Warriors with a team-high 19 points and he also added six rebounds and six assists.
A big key to the game was the 17 turnovers Merrimack forced. You can expect a great defensive battle from both teams Wednesday. Don’t expect a blowout from either team, as this one should be a close gritty battle.
