PJ Haggerty and Memphis will take the court against Jaden Akins and Michigan State in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational.
The Maui Invitational presented by Novavax is in full swing as Memphis will take on Michigan State in their second game in as many days at the Lahaina Civic Center in Hawai’i on Tuesday night. The Tigers came into this game with an undefeated record at 4-0. They had taken down Missouri, UNLV, Ohio, and San Francisco in a mix of home and away games. This was their first top-25-ranked game as they matched up with the No. 2-ranked UConn in the first round of the Maui Invitational. It was a hard fought game that took overtime to finish.
The two teams were tied 40-40 at the halftime break, and both had 42 points in the second half. It was only in overtime that there was a separation as Memphis won by two points. Tyrese Hunter, the senior guard who came over from Texas, led the team with 26 points. PJ Haggerty had 22 points with three rebounds and five assists as well. Colby Rogers rounds out the three-headed monster. He finished with 19 points.
The Spartans came into this weekend with a 4-1 record. Their only loss came against the top-ranked team in the nation on the road in the State Farm Champions Classic by just eight points. They met with Colorado in the opening game of this tournament, and they picked up the win by 16 points. They broke out to a 13-point lead at the halftime break and didn’t look back.
Michigan State was full of contributors in this game. Only Jase Richardson finished in double figures with 13 points and four rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench. Frankie Fidler finished with nine points and six rebounds. Jeremy Fears Jr. led the team with six assists while scoring just eight points.
