It’s the Battle 4 Atlantis matchup most expected, but Indiana and Gonzaga are on the wrong side of the bracket on Thursday.
No. 14 Indiana (4-1) and No. 3 Gonzaga (5-1) were expected to match up at the Battle 4 Atlantis on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, but few anticipated it would be on the consolation side of the bracket. The Hoosiers and Bulldogs each took their first losses of the season on Wednesday and will square off in a consolation semifinal on Thursday afternoon. Indiana missed the postseason last year after a 19-14 mark while Gonzaga played in its 25th consecutive NCAA tournament, reaching the Sweet Sixteen before finishing up with a 27-8 mark.

The Bulldogs took their largest lead, 10 points, early in the second half before West Virginia charged back with a 12-0 run. Gonzaga led by five with 25 seconds left, but tied the game with five seconds remaining before taking an 86-78 overtime win. Braden Huff paced the offense with 19 points and Khalif Battle added 16 while Ryan Nembhard dished 12 assists. Huff scores 14.8 points per game, Battle gets 14.7 points a night, Graham Ike averages 13.0 points and 5.8 rebounds and Nembhard puts up 11.3 points and 9.8 assists per contest.
Indiana turned the ball over 23 times and shot just 33.3% as it was ambushed 89-61 by Louisville on Wednesday. Malik Reneau scored 21 points and Oumar Ballo tossed in 11 in the loss. Mackenzie Mgbako leads the club with 16.6 points per game while Reneau nets 15.0 points an outing. Ballo averages 11.8 points and 9.0 rebounds.
The programs have split four meetings prior to this game, with Gonzaga taking the most recent matchup 70-54 in Indianapolis on Dec. 6, 2008.
