Villanova (1-0) returns for its third season under coach Kyle Neptune on Wednesday after two straight first round losses in the NIT. On Wednesday, the Wildcats welcome Columbia (1-0) to Finneran Pavilion. Neptune is 36-33 since Jay Wright‘s retirement in April 2022 and Villanova has gone 10-10 in Big East Conference play each of the last two seasons. The Lions haven’t been to the NCAA tournament since 1968 and last played in the postseason when they won the 2016 CIT. Coach Jim Engles is 60-135 in his eighth season and Columbia finished 13-14 a season ago.

The Wildcats heated up in the second half on Monday to pull away from visiting Lafayette for a 75-63 win. Villanova hit 61.3 percent of its shots after the break, with Wooga Poplar scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Tyler Perkins and Jhamir Brickus each added 13 points, while Enoch Boakye contributed 10 points and 11 boards.
The Lions came back from 13 points down to pick up an 81-78 victory at Loyola-Maryland on Monday. Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa paced the attack with 24 points while also finishing with eight rebounds and three steals, while Kenny Noland added 19 points.
Villanova is 5-2 against Columbia in the all-time series, most recently getting a 75-60 win at home on Nov. 10, 2017. The Wildcats made two key additions via the transfer portal, picking up Poplar from Miami and adding Brickus from Big Five rival La Salle to augment versatile returning big man Eric Dixon.
