The Red Storm dominated the first half, taking a 14 point lead into the locker room and forcing the Bears to dig themselves out of a hole. Norchad Omier led the Baylor offense with 24 points, but five other Bears joined him in double figures to get back in the game. Omier also led the team on the boards with 10 rebounds to record a double-double in the win. Baylor struggled from the field, going just 35-83 for a shooting percentage of 42.2. The team shot much better from long range with a 51.7 average from beyond the arc. Foul shooting will need to be improved upon, however, as the Bears only shot 14-23 from the line.
The Volunteers are undefeated so far this season at 5-0, but Baylor has the potential to hand the team its first loss. Tennessee has been mostly unchallenged this season with its first real test coming in Thursday night’s game against Virginia which the team won handily in a 64-42 victory. The Volunteers did not put forward their best foot against the Cavaliers either, shooting just 37.9 percent from the field and 36 percent from distance. The team also struggled at the line, going 5-10 in the win.
Chaz Lanier led the Tennessee offense with 26 points while Igor Miličić Jr. joined him in double figures with a 14-point performance. Miličić Jr. pulled down a total of eight rebounds, mostly offensive, to help the Vols hold onto possession. The team collectively finished the game with eight steals and seven blocks, but only converted those into five fast break points.
With the way Tennessee performed in the opening round, the scales are tipped in Baylor’s favor, however, the Vols should not be counted out. The last game between Baylor and Tennessee dates back to 2022 in which the Vols earned a 93-86 victory. Tune in Friday night to see which of these teams can keep its win streak intact.
