The inaugural first round of the new expanded 12-team College Football Playoff wraps up on Saturday night with arguably the biggest heavyweight bout of the initial games. In the only matchup between a Big Ten team and SEC team in the first round, No. 8 Ohio State (10-2, 7-2 Big Ten) host No. 7 Tennessee (10-2, 6-2 SEC) at Ohio Stadium. Who will punch the final ticket to the quarterfinal round? For Tennessee, this is the first trip to the College Football Playoff since the system was expanded to four teams back in 2014. The Volunteers were one of the most well-rounded teams this year, ranking eighth nationally scoring 37.2 points per game on offense, while ranking fourth nationally allowing 13.9 points per game on defense.

The Vols are one of three Playoff teams to rank in the top 10 in both categories this year, along with Notre Dame and Indiana. Tennessee lost just two games t his year – both on the road. They had an early-season October loss to Arkansas 19-14, and then fell 31-17 to Georgia in mid-November.
Meanwhile, Ohio State was led by the nation’s top-ranked defense. The Buckeyes allowed just 10.9 points per game this year. In six of their 12 games, the Buckeyes held their opponent to under 10 points.
Ohio State had two very different losses this year. The first was a close game on the road against eventual top seed Oregon, 32-31. Then in the regular season finale the Buckeyes got bullied at home by rival Michigan, losing 13-10.
