This will be a battle between two 0-3 teams when UT-Chattanooga hosts Portland State on Saturday night. Both of Chattanooga’s last two games were very close losing to Georgia State by three and losing last week to No. 23 Mercer 10-3. It was the Mocs’ home and Southern Conference opener but their offense just could not get out of first gear. The good news for Chattanooga was its defense was outstanding. But the Mocs had just 19 rushing yards on 20 attempts. Chattanooga also didn’t convert on any of its 12 third-down attempts. The Mocs did have 259 passing yards though which was more than double of Mercer so at least there is something to hang their hats on. Chattanooga’s only scoring drive happened in the second quarter when after five plays on 61 yards kicker Jude Kelley converted on a 32-yard field goal to cut Mercer’s lead to 7-3. Unfortunately for the Mocs, they couldn’t score at all in the second half. Hopefully for them, facing another 0-3 team will unlock the Mocs offense.

After having its game against South Dakota canceled, Portland State played Boise State in their last game. Almost nothing went the Vikings’ way as they lost 56-14. The Broncos racked up 609 yards with 342 coming on the ground. Portland State tied the game early in the first quarter on an impressive 73-yard drive which culminated in a Delon Thompson touchdown run. But Portland State wasn’t able to score again until early in the fourth quarter. Thankfully for both teams, this matchup should be much closer tonight.
