Western Michigan will try to hold onto its top spot in the MAC standings when it hosts Northern Illinois on Wednesday night.
Mid-week MAC football rolls on Wednesday night with a pair of games including the first place team in the conference. Through 10 weeks, Western Michigan (5-3, 4-0) is the only team left in the MAC without a conference loss. However, Miami (OH) and Bowling Green both won on Tuesday, joining the Broncos as four-win teams at the top of the standings. In order to maintain their lead of the top spot in the conference, the Broncos will need to beat Northern Illinois (4-4, 1-3) on Wednesday night in Kalamazoo.

This matchup pits the top scoring offense in the MAC against the best defense. Western Michigan leads all teams in the conference, scoring 34 points per game (no other team is scoring more than 30). It’s been the Broncos’ ground game that’s really carried them, as they’ve run for a conference-best 209 yards per game.
On the other side is a Northern Illinois defense that is allowing just 17.6 points per game, while no other team in the MAC is allowing less than 20. Like the Western Michigan offense, the strength of the NIU defense is in the ground game. The Huskies are allowing a conference-low 110.1 rushing yards per game.
This will be the 50th all-time meeting between Northern Illinois and Western Michigan. Western Michigan leads the series 27-22, but Northern Illinois has won each of the last two matchups, including a 24-0 shutout victory last year.
