Thursday night’s college football slate includes a key game in the MEAC conference. First place will be on the line at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium in Orangeburg, where South Carolina State (5-2, 1-0 MEAC) is hosting NC Central (6-2, 2-0 MEAC). Both teams come in as the only two teams left yet to lose a conference game, even just a few weeks into conference play. They’re also the only two teams left in the conference with an overall record over .500 at this point in the season.

South Carolina State comes in having won four games in a row, with its last loss coming against an FBS program in Georgia Southern. Last week the Bulldogs lit up the scoreboard at home, knocking off Delaware State 69-35. Graduate quarterback Eric Phoenix was incredibly efficient, completing 18 of his 21 passes for 341 yards with four touchdowns and no picks. He also ran the ball four times for 30 yards and a touchdown.
Phoenix is the MEAC’s leading passer so far this season, completing 62.6 percent of his passes for 1,791 yards and 14 touchdowns. South Carolina State also has the conference’s two leading receivers – Caden High has caught 39 passes for 627 yards and Justin Smith-Brown has 32 catches for 464 yards. Both have caught three touchdowns each.
NC Central comes in with a five-game winning streak of its won, also having last lost to an FBC program in North Carolina. The Eagles have been dominant offensively this season but last week at home had to lean on their defense in a 16-7 win over Morgan State.
