Two teams looking for their first FBS victories face off at Snapdragon Stadium as Hawaii visits San Diego State
San Diego State (1-3) has lost its last three games and on Saturday night hosts Hawaii (2-2) in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams. The teams are a combined 0-5 against FBS competition, with the Aztecs getting their lone win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Aug. 31 and the Rainbow Warriors beating Delaware State and Northern Iowa, both from the FCS. Hawaii is coached by Timmy Chang, a record-setting quarterback with the program from 2000-04. He is 10-20 in his third season. Sean Lewis is in his first season at the helm for San Diego State, replacing retired Brady Hoke.

The Rainbow Warriors come off a bye week after routing Northern Iowa 36-7 on Sept. 21. Brayden Schager was 35-of-43 for 374 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions in the win. In four games, he’s completed 60.9% of his throws for 1,056 yards, eight TDs and five picks.
The Aztecs squandered a 21-10 lead and were shut out in the second half of a 22-21 loss at Central Michigan on Sept. 28. A 46-yard field goal with five seconds left completed the Chippewas’ comeback. Marquez Cooper ran for 111 yards and a touchdown while Danny O’Neil finished with 246 yards and two scores through the air. Cooper has 474 yards in four games while O’Neil is 47-of-80 for 567 yards and four TDs in his three appearances.
San Diego State is 25-11-2 all-time against Hawaii with four straight wins, including a 41-34 victory in Honolulu last Oct. 14. The Rainbow Warriors last qualified for a bowl in 2021, but their Hawaii Bowl appearance gainst Memphis was cancelled. The Aztecs played in the 2022 Hawaii Bowl, losing to Middle Tennessee.
