Georgia State heads to Marshall on Thursday night with both teams coming off Sun Belt Conference losses.
Marshall (3-3) tried to get back on the winning track on Thursday night when it hosts Georgia State (2-3) at Edwards Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia. The Thundering Herd fell to 1-1 in Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday with a 24-23 loss at Georgia Southern while the Panthers are off to an 0-2 SBC start after losing to visiting Old Dominion on Saturday. Head coach Dell McGee is in his first season at Georgia State after eight seasons as an assistant coach at Georgia. Coach Shawn Elliott left for an assistant’s job at South Carolina in February after leading the Panthers to a Famous Idaho Potato Bowl win over Utah State in December. Charles Huff is 25-20 in his fourth year at Marshall and has taken the team to a bowl each year, including a loss to UTSA in the Frisco Bowl last December.

The Thundering Herd couldn’t hold a 23-3 lead entering the fourth quarter, with Georgia Southern getting the go-ahead score with a minute remaining. Braylon Braxton threw two touchdown passes, both to Toby Payne, as Marshall built its lead. The Herd were penalized 11 times for 79 yards.
Georgia State never led in its 21-14 loss to Old Dominion on Saturday. Christian Veilleux, a transfer from Pitt, threw for 211 yards and a touchdown and an interception before he was relieved by Zach Gibson, who finished 6-of-6 for 49 yards and a score. Ted Hurst caught six passes for 85 yards and a TD.
Stone Earle leads Marshall with 634 passing yards for seven touchdowns and two interceptions while Braxton also has seven TD passes in just 41 attempts. A.J. Turner told the ground game with 540 yards and Christian Fitzpatrick tops receivers with 20 catches, 299 yards and three scores.
Veilleux has thrown for 1,284 yards, nine touchdowns and five picks. Freddie Brock’s 306 yards leads the ground game and Hurst has 25 receptions for 434 yards and five scores.
