Florida can cap its second-half surge on Saturday with an in-state rivalry win over Florida State up in Tallahassee.
It’s been a tale of two seasons for Florida (6-5, 4-4 SEC) this year. The Gators started the year 1-2 with a pair of double-digit losses, and were 4-5 after the first week in November. That left many questioning the future of the program and head coach Billy Napier. Napier and the team have turned things around though, and the last two weeks have played spoiler in the SEC beating then-No. 21 LSU and No. 9 Ole Miss. That upset miss – in which the Gators were double-digit underdogs – made the team bowl eligible. The Gators can put the cap on this turnaround in their regular season finale on Saturday, this time going on the road to take on in-state rival Florida State (2-9, 1-7 ACC).

A big part of Florida’s turnaround has been the play of true freshman quarterback DJ Lagway, who took over as the starter full-time starter senior transfer Graham Mertz suffered a season-ending leg injury in mid-October. Despite battling injuries of his own at times Lagway has provided a spark on offense throwing for 1,477 yards and nine touchdowns.
Like Florida, Florida State began the season failing to reach expectations. However, the Seminoles have not had the bounce back the Gators have had. They’ll try to salvage the season with an upset rivalry win against Florida, which would be their third head-to-head win in a row. Florida leads the all-time series 37-28 with two ties, but hasn’t won in Tallahassee since 2018.
