SMU looks to finish its first regular season campaign in the ACC strong when they host Cal on Saturday afternoon.
No. 9 SMU is one of the better teams in the country and the Mustangs have still largely flew under the radar this season. It was the first season SMU switched over into the ACC from American Athletic Conference and it couldn’t be going much better so far. The Mustangs are 10-1 overall and are undefeated in ACC play with a 7-0 record. Before this regular season finale against Cal on Saturday, SMU is already in the ACC title game. It doesn’t hurt the Mustangs’ cause that they are favored by 13.5 points and are riding an eight-game winning streak.

SMU is coming off a smackdown of Virginia last week beating the Cavaliers 33-7. Quarterback Kevin Jennings played great to clinch a spot in the conference title game. Jennings threw for a career-high 323 yards and for two touchdowns and he scored another rushing. Virginia was never in the game with the Mustangs defense dominating. The Cavaliers didn’t score until four minutes left in regulation. Expect similar results at home against the Golden Bears this afternoon.
Cal has a better record than Virginia but the Golden Bears have a 2-5 record in their new conference. The good news for Cal is that it is coming off a win off its former Pac-12 rival in Stanford by a 24-21 final. QB Fernando Mendoza had a great game as well throwing for 299 yards and three scores. Cal was down 21-7 but it scored 17 unanswered points to finish the game. Jonathan Brady scored two touchdowns and caught the go-ahead score. Mendoza also led the team in rushing but it was for 35 yards. The key to an upset today will be a more balanced attack against the Mustangs.
