Surging Bruins open three-game road trip in matinee matchup against Ovechkin and the Capitals
Winners of five of their last seven games, the Boston Bruins set sail on a three-game road trip that begins on Tuesday afternoon for a New Year’s Eve matinee meeting against the Washington Capitals in an Eastern Conference tilt. The Capitals are 3-4 in their last seven games but have won three in a row on home ice. Washington winger Alexander Ovechkin has returned to the lineup after missing 16 games with a broken bone in his leg and has restarted his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goal scoring record and comes into this game just 25 goals shy of The Great One’s record.

Despite being sidelined for over a month with the injury, Ovechkin leads Washington with 17 goals this season and is tied for the 14th most in the league. The number one overall pick in the 2004 NHL Draft, Ovi has played his entire career with the Capitals and scored 40 or more goals in each of his first five seasons including a career high 65 goals during the 2007-08 campaign.
The Capitals rank third in the NHL scoring 3.67 goals per game but their defense, paced by the league’s sixth ranked penalty killing unit, is allowing just 2.64 goals per game ranking Washington in the top five in scoring defense.
The Bruins won the first meeting between the teams eight days ago in Boston behind a three-goal third period to earn a 4-1 win and lead the series 6-4 since the start of the 2022-23 season including three of the last five meetings in the nation’s capital.
