Sunday’s matchup at Madison Square Garden in New York is a family thing as coach Richard Pitino brings New Mexico (3-0) to Manhattan to take on Rick Pitino’s 22nd-ranked St. John’s (3-0). The elder Pitino, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, enters his second season leading the Red Storm, who were 20-13 last season and last played in the NCAA tournament in 2019. The younger Pitino took his Lobos to the NCAA tournament last spring and is 64-41 in his fourth season at the school. New Mexico was 26-10 a season ago.

St. John’s comes off a 66-45 win over visiting Wagner at Carnesecca Arena in Queens on Wednesday. RJ Luis Jr. came off the bench for 13 points and Aaron Scott added 11. Kadary Richmond, a Seton Hall transfer, dished out seven assists. Luis averages 16.3 points and 6.7 rebounds, with Simeon Wilcher putting up 13.3 points per game. Richmond posts 7.0 points and 6.0 assists a night.
The Lobos took down visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 100-81 on Tuesday night. Donovan Dent led the charge with 25 points and 10 assists, Kayde Dotson added 18 points and Atiki Ally Atiki swatted away five shots. Dent posts 19.0 points and 9.7 assists per game, with Nelly Joseph getting 18.0 points and 12.3 boards a contest.
Rick Pitino is 2-1 coaching against his son, with Richard getting his first win in the matchup as New Mexico beat his father’s Iona team two years ago. St. John’s is 3-0 all-time against the Lobos, winning the most recent meeting 70-62 at home on Nov. 20, 1999.
