The San Antonio Spurs (3-5) come home to find the Portland Trail Blazers (3-5) already waiting for them in advance of Thursday night’s matchup at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio. The Spurs have lost back-to-back games after being blown out on the road on Wednesday night while Portland is 1-1 on its four-game road trip and comes off a Monday night victory. Coach Gregg Popovich remains away from San Antonio recovering from an illness, with assistant coach Mitch Johnson running the team.

The Trail Blazers got 20 points from Dalano Banton in the fourth quarter as they pulled away for a 118-100 win over the host New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night. Banton only played the final 12 minutes, finishing 8-of-9 from the floor. Anfernee Simons went for 24 points while Deandre Ayton added 19 points and 13 rebounds. Simons averages 19.5 points and 5.1 assists per game while Ayton gets 14.4 points and 11.5 rebounds and Jerami Grant scores 18.3 points a night.
The Spurs shot just 35.9% and turned the ball over 12 times in the first half, trailing by 25 at the break en route to a 127-100 loss to the Houston Rockets on Wednesday. Victor Wembanyama dropped 15 points and blocked three shots in the loss, while Julian Champagnie added 13 points. San Antonio was dominated in the paint by a 66-46 margin and never led. Wembanyama leads the league with 3.9 blocks per game while also averaging 18.9 points and 10.3 rebounds. Chris Paul puts up 12.0 points and 8.9 assists per outing.
Portland is still without wings Shaedon Sharpe (labral tear in left shoulder) and Matisse Thybulle (right knee injury management), with neither having played this season. For the Spurs, wing Devin Vassell remains sidelined after surgery to address a stress reaction in his right foot and point guard Tre Jones has been out with a sprained right ankle sustained on opening night. Forward Jeremy Sochan will undergo surgery on his fractured left thumb and will be sidelined indefinitely.
