The Detroit Pistons (2-2), coming off the worst season in franchise history, close their preseason on Wednesday night when they host the Cleveland Cavaliers (0-2) at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. Both teams come into the 2024-25 season with new coaches. J.B. Bickerstaff landed with the Pistons after he was fired by the Cavaliers following a 48-34 season and a loss in the Eastern Conference semifinals to the eventual champion Boston Celtics. Kenny Atkinson took over Cleveland after three years as an assistant with the Golden State Warriors. He was 118-190 with one playoff appearance in three-plus seasons with the Brooklyn Nets from 2016-20.

The Cavaliers added No. 20 overall pick Jaylon Tyson from Cal in the NBA draft and opted to extend big men Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen, as well as superstar guard Donovan Mitchell. They come off a 129-117 loss to the visiting Indiana Pacers on Thursday in which veterans Darius Garland, Caris LeVert, Mitchell and Mobley were scratched while Sam Merrill (wrist) and Max Strus (hip) sat out. Two-way player Emoni Bates is out after surgery to repair a torn right meniscus.
Detroit dropped a 111-93 decision on the road to the Golden State Warriors on Sunday. Ausar Thompson (illness) and Bobi Klintman (calf) did not play. The Pistons added free agents Malik Beasley, Tobias Harris and Paul Reed and acquired Tim Hardaway Jr. in a trade from the Dallas Mavericks and picked up Klintman and Wendell Moore Jr. in a four-team trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Detroit also added No. 5 overall pick Ron Holland from G-League Ignite.
Cleveland has made consecutive postseason trips, its first without LeBron James on the roster since the 1997-98 season, while the Pistons haven’t been to the playoffs since 2019.
