With just two races left before the Xfinity Series playoffs, the road race at Watkins Glen takes on added significance
Eight drivers are provisionally qualified for the NASCAR Xfinity Racing Series playoffs, which open in two weeks. Plenty of other drivers and teams are jockeying for the final four positions with two races remaining. On Saturday, drivers hit the road course at Watkins Glen International in New York for the Mission 200 at the Glen. The course, opened in 1956, has hosted the Xfinity Series each year since 1991, except for 2002-04 and the 2020 race, which was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shane van Gisbergen is the driver to watch on Saturday, as all of his series-best three victories have come on road courses this season. Two-time winners include Justin Allgaier, the points leader; Chandler Smith; Austin Hill; and last year’s winner at the Glen, Sam Mayer. Defending series champion Cole Custer, Riley Herbst and Jesse Love each have one victory.
Among the eight provisional qualifiers, the standings now show Allgaier and Hill leading, followed by van Gisbergen, Smith, Mayer, Love, Custer and Herbst. AJ Allmendinger — also a strong road-course performer — is 144 points clear of 13th-place Ryan Sieg, with Sheldon Creed 123 points above the bubble, Parker Kligerman 74 points clear and Sammy Smith holding a 44-point edge.
The 82-lap race includes two initial stages of 20 laps each and a 42-lap final stage. Terry Labonte (1991, 1994-96) and Marcos Ambrose (2008-10, 2014) won this event a record four times each. Mayer’s win last year came by 0.909 seconds over Creed in a race that went four laps into overtime. Mayer is the only driver on the circuit with an Xfinity win at the Glen.
