The Mariners picked up the first game in the series with a score of 8-2 over the second-place Padres. It marked the third straight win for Seattle and put the team only two wins away from getting back to .500 on the season.
The Mariners are currently in second place in the AL West but still trail the Astros by 13.5 games. The team is starting to find some consistency and are 7-3 in their last ten games, but they need to start knocking off some of the stronger teams if they want to get into a playoff position come fall.
The Padres, on the other hand, have been struggling recently and are only 3-7 in their last ten games. While San Diego is much closer to the NL West-leading Dodgers than the Mariners are to the AL West-leading Astros, the Padres have some work to make up a four-and-a-half-game deficit to overtake the leaders.
Today, the Padres will look to get back on track and even the series before hosting the Giants for a four-game series.
