The Padres made the Wild Card round after finishing with a 93-69 record, five games behind LA in the division. They matched up with the runner-up in the NL East, the Atlanta Braves, in the NL Wild Card. They made quick work of Atlanta, winning 4-0 in Game 1 and 5-4 in Game 2 of the best-of-three series. Catcher Kyle Higashioka played a pivotal role in the WC round with a home run and two RBIs in the first game and a home run that sparked a rally in the second game.
You had no shortage of offense in game 1. An RBI from Jurickson Profar and a two-run home run from Manny Machado gave San Diego a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Superstar Shohei Ohtani then hit a three-run homer in the second inning to knot it all even at 3-3.

San Diego put more runs on the board in the third inning with an RBI double from Xander Bogaerts that scored two players and drew the lead to 5-3. Just one inning later, Los Angeles answered with a score on a wild pitch and a two-run RBI single from Teoscar Hernández. Just one inning later, Tommy Edman grounded into a double play leading to another run.
Los Angeles eventually won the game 7-5, with Ohtani made his playoff debut memorable with two runs, one home run, and three RBIs on a 2-for-4 night. Yu Darvish for San Diego and Jack Flaherty for Los Angeles will be on the mound pitching Sunday.
