After a historical grand slam, the World Series continues as the Los Angeles Dodgers host the New York Yankees in Game 2.
That’s going to be a tough act to follow. This 2024 World Series between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers was already an incredibly hyped matchup between two of the most prominent teams in the history of the game. These two hadn’t faced off in the World Series since 1981 even though this is now the 12th time they’ve faced off in the Fall Classic. But there was nothing quite like Game 1 of this World Series and there will likely be nothing like it for a very long time. It was one of the best games in the history of baseball and somehow that statement avoids hyperbole. This World Series has already lived up to the hype of these monumental lineups. If the opener was any indication, we’re in for another thrilling ride for Game 2.

This all comes after Freddie Freeman‘s shot heard round the world. For most of Game 1, we were treated to a pitcher’s duel from Southern California natives Gerrit Cole and Jack Flaherty. That was special enough in itself but this duel lasted into extra innings where the Yankees struck first in the 10th to get the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice from shortstop Anthony Volpe to drive in Jazz Chisholm Jr. after he singled and stole second. It was looking like that would be the winning run after the Dodgers were down to their final out in the 10th. Manager Aaron Boone brought in lefty Nestor Cortes came in for relief duty even though the usual starter hadn’t pitched in 37 days due to injury.
The club walked Mookie Betts to load the bases. What happened next will forever go down in the history books. There are just no slouches in this incredible Dodgers lineup. Freddie Freeman walked up to the plate after a trying season with injuries and the health of his son. For just a moment, none of that mattered and the magic of baseball took over. Freeman did his best impression of Kirk Gibson in the 1988 World Series, two hobbled Dodgers hitting iconic homers, by hitting the first walk-off grand slam in the history of the World Series. The parallels between the two stars and the iconic call ‘Gibby, meet Freddie’ from Joe Davis is enough to give you goosebumps far past Halloween. It’s hard not to be romantic about baseball.
We couldn’t have gotten off to a better start to this 2024 Fall Classic and it will be up to Yoshinobu Yamamoto who gets the start to keep this momentum rolling for Los Angeles. The Dodgers are the -145 favorites at home tonight for Game 2. Yamamoto had a strong regular season with a 7-3 record and a 3.00 ERA. The Dodgers have won in all three games he’s started this postseason. Yamamoto pitched one game in the NLCS against the New York Mets in a game the Dodgers won 10-2 after he went 4.1 innings and gave up two runs. The Yankees will try to bounce back from a crushing defeat when they were so close to stealing one out on the road by starting Carlos Rodon who only gave up three runs in two starts in the ALCS against Cleveland. We should be in for another great pitching matchup as this series is turning out to be one for the ages. You’re not going to want to miss a moment.
